Air Filter?

21602 Views 31 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  galaxy
So I live in the Sierra foothills and it’s a dusty dry environment. Well that pretty white Factory air cleaner isn’t very white anymore and I was wondering what everyone has replaced theirs with? I see Ford Performance has one their really proud of ($$) or there’s K&N or ?

Any input? Thanks.

Amsoil. And it’s blue. I don’t think many folks know about it and I’m the only one I’ve seen with one. The Ford Performance one is just an off the shelf, universal fit conical, relabeled Airaid. Still a great filter, just that people shouldn’t think it’s some mystical creature cause it has Ford performance on the box.

As stated above, the F/P filter is the same as the Airaid filter, which are dry filters, and a bit pricey. The best price on OEM filters I have found is about $34. If you are going to replace or clean air filters often, you may be better off going with the aftermarket, K&N or Airaid. Although the Airaid -F/P filters start out as a nice blue filter, after a few cleanings they will loose that color and eventually look like a used cloth filter.
I have stayed away from oiled filters and used both the Airaid and OEM and settled for using and replacing the OEM factory paper filter about once per year.

Oh...the Amsoil is also a dry filter and it won’t change colors. Never seen that. I’m forced to go with the Amsoil filter cause it matches my blue valve covers ;-)

Hey Jim, I have the Ford Performance (Air Raid) blue (dry) filter. Have had it on for about 2300 miles now still bright blue but haven't needed to clean it yet. It was about $75.00 (IIRC) and will save $$'s in the long run over replacing the OEM filters. Be sure and get the right application as (I'm sure you've seen) there is a locator tab along the top edge that fits into the air filter box. I have seen some of the other aftermarket filters don't have the tab.

Hey Galaxy, same reason I went with the Ford Performance filter, matches my JLT Lightning blue coil covers (that and I like a reusable (dry) filter).

I read an article several years ago regarding the manager of a construction fleet who did a trial of K&N filters to see if he could save some money by using a re-usable oiled filter vs. the paper filters that quickly clogged in that dusty environment.

Oil analysis showed a lot of dirt getting through the K&N, which made the decision in favor of staying with the factory paper filter elements.

I used to use K&N filters on my cars but I also find the paper ones less hassle having to periodically re oil them and can see how more dirt would get in the K&N filter.
Performance of K&N filter is old news. But don’t compare K&N oiled filters to any/all dry aftermarket filters. Apples and oranges. Dry media, synthetic filters will outperform and outlast paper.

Can you post a link or part number the AMSOIL filter please? I tried so search by vehicle on their site but couldn't find it. I'm assuming it's just a universal one?
EaAU6080. Yes, it is one of their universal, conical filters and it’s an exact match. Keep in mind the Airaid filter is the same concept. The Airaid/Ford Performance filter (same filter) is nothing cosmic nor special. It’s also simply one of Airaid’s generic, universal fit filters that they relabeled to fit this application. Amsoil just hasn’t done that. I sent them the info and pics, so maybe they’ll add it.

Thank you sir! I've used amsoil exclusively in all my cars so their air filter is an obvious choice for me.
Well I went with the Amsoil filter. Seems equal to the Ford/ Affraid version, but $25 less. Fits well and looks good with my red engine accents.

Looks good JT, curious, did the Amsoil filter have the locator tab on the top edge that points down and fits into the slot on the airbox? The FP did and when I was researching I noticed some others didn't have the tab...

Yes it has the tab, mounts just like original.

You may also note, I accented the Ford Perfomance Logo on my Oil Seperator. I guess it’s a through back to my model building days as a child...

Interesting Jim about your filter there. What’s part number is that? I ask because mine didnt have a tab, and mine is blue as blue can be. Chrome end plate with Amsoil logo on it (can’t see yours to tell).

What is the part number for that one in red, or can you provide a link to where you bought it?

Jim...I'm confused. You said you went with an Amsoil filter. That link is to a K&N and the one in your pic is a K&N; or at a minimum it's not an Amsoil.

Crap, my bad. I have a friend who always talks Amsoil and it must be imprinted on my brain. Actually don’t know if they even offer. Sorry!
